Angela Merkel

Angela Merkel is a German politician who was born on July 17, 1954, in Hamburg, West Germany. She is a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party and served as the Chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021. Merkel is widely regarded as one of the world’s most powerful women and has been influential in shaping German and European politics.

Merkel grew up in East Germany and studied physics at the University of Leipzig, where she earned a doctorate in 1986. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, she became involved in politics and joined the newly formed Democratic Awakening party. In 1990, she was elected to the Bundestag, the German federal parliament, representing a constituency in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

In 1991, Merkel joined the CDU and quickly rose through the ranks of the party. She became the Minister for Women and Youth in the government of Chancellor Helmut Kohl in 1991 and later served as the Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety from 1994 to 1998.

Merkel’s political career took a significant turn in 2000 when she was elected as the CDU’s General Secretary. In 2002, she became the leader of the CDU, succeeding Wolfgang Schäuble. Under her leadership, the party made significant gains in the 2005 federal elections, and Merkel was elected as the first female Chancellor of Germany.

During her tenure as Chancellor, Merkel faced numerous challenges, including the global financial crisis, the Eurozone debt crisis, and the refugee crisis. Her tenure as Chancellor ended on December 8, 2021, when Olaf Scholz succeeded her.
